Where On The Web

As our world gets smaller the World Wide Web gets bigger with lots to offer dog fanciers. Now is a good time to look at some very useful web sites and places where you can get help.

First, try the new and greatly improved AKC web site www.akc.org. Not only can you get information on different breeds, breeder referral, upcoming shows and judges, etc, but you can also check your dog’s points on-line, anytime! Just sign up at the Online Store (free). You can get reports of wins, tilted progeny, pedigrees, and it will even help you find an area or show that may have a major. Some of these reports require a small fee.

Many, if not all, of the AKC licensed dog show superintendents have web sites, some better then others. The STCA web site at clubs.akc.org/skye, Web Links lists most of them. Now try out the Moss Bow Foley site at www.infodog.com. Not only does it list all AKC shows (even field and agility) but you can enter any AKC show through their site for an extra $3.00 per entry. Well worth it if you have left entering until the last minute or day or hour. Want to find out where your favorite judge will be judging? Look up his or her upcoming schedule. How about just seeing who is judging skyes for the next 30, 60, 90, or 120 days around the country? It’s a great source of help in planning your show schedule.

Our last article highlighted our older skyes. One web site that can help here is www.srdogs.com. They have a lot of information on living with and enjoying our older dogs.

Have you visited The Straight Poop site yet? Sign up for their email newsletter that comes once a week. They cruise the web for you and find interesting dog-related sites. How about www.breeders.net? List your kennel or club for free!

Traveling? Go to www.mapquest.com. Choose “On Line Maps” and get a street map of where your next show is, or the new vets office. Click on directions and it will give them to you door to door. Need a hotel? Try the travel guide button. Or if you still need a hotel try www.petswelcome.com; a site specifically designed to help you travel with your dog. Need a cheap airfare to your next show or to that trip to Crufts you’ve been planning? Try www.expedia.com and keep checking the rates of flights. They change day to day. It will compare all airlines and schedules.

How about veterinary help? You might try the senior dog site or about.delphi.com/ab-vetmedicine/start. You have to sign up (free) but it has a lot of good information. Maybe vetinfo.com will be able to offer some help. For emergency pet information try www.geocities.com/~olelo/shelties/emergencydoglinks.html. It is a long address, but worth the trip.

If you want to keep up on legislation regarding animals try the National Animal Interest Alliance at www.naiaonline.org. Collecting? How about ebay.com? Remember some people mix up Scotties and Skyes and check both areas.

Let’s move on to supplies. Here are 4 good ones: www.cherrybrook.com, Kvvet.com, www.jemarpet.com, or www.jbpet.com. Want dog books? Try amazon.com, www.4mdogbooks.com, or Direct Book Service at www.dogandcatbooks.com.

There are many general dog information sites, but a few very special ones are www.doginfomat.com and www.dogpatch.org. Or for fun try www.cyberpet.com with their great link page to loads of information.

Are you serious about genetics? Try www.phrma.org/genomics/lexicon or acmepet.petsmart.com/canine/genetic/article or maybe www.vgl.ucdavis.edu/research/canine. It is amazing what you will find if you go to any search engine and type in canine genetics.

Don’t forget the Skye Terrier Club of America’s web site at clubs.akc.org/skye. It has general information as well as links to many of these sites. You will also find specialty information, and a growing library of AKC Gazette articles from current and past issues.

Happy surfing!
